Greenville County Schools (GCS) is the public school district serving Greenville County, South Carolina, headquartered at 301 E. Camperdown Way, Greenville. The district is the largest school district in South Carolina and the 44th largest in the United States, serving over 77,000 students across more than 100 schools, spanning Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12.
The district is governed by a Superintendent and a Board of Trustees, who set policies and priorities alongside recommendations from the annual Calendar Committee, which comprises parents, teachers, principals, and district administrators — reflecting GCS’s commitment to community input in key decisions.
Planning: Two-Year Calendar Release
A distinctive feature of Greenville County Schools is that it releases its academic calendars two full school years in advance, giving families and staff ample time to plan. The 2026-2027 calendar was released in December 2024, allowing families more than 18 months to organise travel, childcare, and family schedules around key school dates.

Makeup Days (State-Required)
Following Hurricane Helene-related closures in 2024-25, the state required GCS to add three potential makeup days to both the 2025-26 and 2026-27 calendars. For 2026-27, if makeup days are needed, the two half-days at the end of the year (May 26-27) would become full days — which would count as one makeup day. These makeup days are only triggered if eLearning is not possible, and GCS notes that outside of Hurricane Helene, the district has not needed to use makeup days in the last five years.
Note: The 2026-27 calendar follows a Year-Round Modified structure in accordance with SC Law Section 59-1-425, which governs the start date window for South Carolina schools.
